Inquiry into the conduct of the Icelandic authorities

An official inquiry has been called for into the conduct of the Icelandic authorities and police during the protests in the summer and autumn of 2005.

In the summer and autumn of 2005 the Icelandic authorities performed numerous illegal arrests, violated the rights of people in custody, entered illegally the dwellings of protestors, violated severely the peace and right of privacy of individuals with thuggish surveilance, threats and intimidating behaviour.

The Directorate of Immigration finally ruled that it had no right to deport any of the foreign people who demonstrated summer 2005 against the heavy industry policy of the Icelandic government.

I have just been reading an interview of Credo Mutwa, it seems to point out the same things that are happening around the world.

He mentions the building of Dams around Africa, as in Trinidad, Iceland, Chile and other places. This is orchestrated by the same people who tear up countries like Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Angola with war, man made diseases like AIDS and famine. Have you also noticed the council estate of my mind? The soul is quickly dying away..

This is what is happening in the U.K and elsewhere, people are being divided and kicked out from their communities and displaced. Sometimes the government will say an area is re-develloped so they can destroy the unity and social networks in place thus increasing the confusion within our communities and stopping the natural "neighbourhood watch" that usually takes place. Basic socially discrimination against the working class because they live in the city, are strong and united and have no spending power (poor). Of course they can't really think for themselves, they are flooded with nasty drugs that the government encourages and profits from behind the scenes. Just walk into any local shop in a council estate, you will notice there is nothing organic or healthy to be consumed, people just can't easily find fish or fresh veg at a cheap cost so they are unable to live a healthy and balanced life anyway. Oh and I forgot to mention that the only comfort those people had is now so expensive (booze and fags) that drugs like crack cocaine are not that far off the mark. Are you starting to get the whole picture..?

What this country’s poorest really need is higher house prices. That's the basis of the government's Housing Renewal Pathfinder schemes – demolishing 400,000 houses across the North of England to build more expensive homes.

'The aim of the £500 million housing market renewal Pathfinder programme is to turn whole communities around by improving the quality of private, local authority and registered social landlord housing. This will involve clearing poor quality houses for which there is little or no demand, building attractive, good quality new homes, and upgrading existing home to push up their market value.' (Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, Feb 2004)

So this means housing market renewal, of course, rather than the renewal or renovation of existing homes. In the 1980s the Tories brought in laws to put far higher tax on repairs than new build, and so far Labour has been happy to stick with them.

Who else is happy with the Pathfinder schemes? The constructiuon companies, for one -- 'Housebuilders have welcomed the programme as a means of maintaining their output' Well known firms such as Bellway Homes (responsible for many other socially and environmentally 'contentious' schemes ) are being brought in by the government to build the new private houses. The other main winners are the companies that usually follow regeneration gravy trains – consultants, accountants and 'ousourcers' such as Capita, the infamous privatisation junkie and PFI contractor.

Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) are also in on the act. The fluffy, family-oriented term actually conceals a range of (private) housing associations and companies which are registered with the Housing Corporation and pay no shareholder dividend. Many of them are involved in the government's transfers of council housing stock, and they are equally happy to be part of various Pathfinder schemes, shuffling out their tenants to make way for the demolitions.

'They completely forget that they are totally smashing community interest, and the essential assets of an existing area.' Anne Power, Professor of Social Policy at the LondonSchool of Economics

And it's the demolitions that are causing the most concern – with one of the scheme's founders fearing a 'social upheaval' like that which accompanied the 1960-70s slum clearances. Pathfinder schemes will demolish 400,000 houses, and may thus involve the eviction of thousands of families, mostly private and RSL tenants, and also home owners. They are suffering now, and the tenants and home buyers of the future will suffer later, due to the increased prices and dearth of social housing. The housing charity, Shelter, has estimated that 167,000 currently affordable homes will be demolished and 'thousands of families may be pushed out of buying or privately renting their home which could have contributed to homelessness rising twice as fast in the north of England than in the south.'

Trinidad under Attack! ALCOA is not only destroying Iceland

Trinidad has its own Alcoa Powered Energy Master Plan:

The area around the town of Vessigny, also known as Union Village will get a Aluminum Smelter plus a handful of other gas based industries. The mega acre site is currently totally cleared of all vegetation, people in the surrounding area are asked to move and the contract for delivery of one cash and carry Chinese smelter plant has been signed. An "agreement in principle" has also been signed with Aloca for the Chatham smelter.

The area between (and including) the village of Chatham and Cap de Ville is earmarked for an Alcoa Aluminum Smelter producing 340,000 tons of Aluminum per year. By the way, that is US$10 billion dollars worth of Aluminum which exceeds the entire annual budget of the country by 4 billion.

Also part of this package will be power plants for these aluminum smelters, power plants that are large enough to provide the entire island with electricity, doubling the country's electricity consumption. It is probably a mere coincidence that just at the same time these projects have been announced, Trinidadian's electricity rates are to be increased between by 7 and 35 % per year annually.

There is no infastructure in place anywhere in this area. Roads are extremely small and in bad condition. One large size truck can back up traffic for miles and residents have been protesting for better roads while being teargased by the local authorities. A highway has been promised for many years but right now, there is none. Already heavy traffic due to industrial activities in the Pt. fortin area makes traveling the area a nightmare.

People are being forcefully moved from their homes in the areas earmarked and surrounding the mega industrial sites. Some of them were promised as much as $15,000 US to compensate for the loss of their homes, just enough to maybe buy a car.

Except for San Fernando, which is just outside of the Master Plan area, there are no proper hospitals in the entire Master Plan area. Except for one hospital promised many years ago and still not even started in Pt. Fortin

The majority, if not all of the planned mega industries are based on Natural Gas. The problem is that there are only 17 years of proven and probable gas reserves remaining. In 1999, there were 40 years of Gas reserves left. Obviously, somebody can't count. Or more than likely, the gas is depleting faster than we thought. These mega gas guzzzling projects can seriously impact the nation's economoy and ability to survive. Where will our electricity come from a few years down the road? Will we have to import gas and oil in 2020?

Both mega industrial sites in Chatham and Union Village are built in seismically unstable areas. The Union Village site is a stone's throw from the pitch lake and partially on top of a fault line. The Chatham site is just a few miles from a major fault line, actually the LNG Gas tanks are right on top of that fault line. Natural gas breaking through the earth's crust occassionally creates mystery islands just off the coast of Chatham. One of them exploded before sinking back into the sea.

The mega projects are done under the guise of providing jobs for South Trinidad residents. As much as 2,000 construction jobs have been promised, yet there is a shortage of construction workers in the country. Over 80% of workers that are now building Alcoa's Iceland facilities are foreign workers. The same is already been predicted in Trinidad. Where will these workers be housed? How much of Alcoa's 10 billion US dollars annual Aluminum production will the average Trinidadian see in his pocket book?

What about the environment? The 340,000 ton Alcoa facility alone will produced the equivalent CO2 of 240,000 cars. Alcoa has not told anybody what they plan to do with the extremely toxic waste their smelter will produce. There's a lot of secrecy and misdirection and our call for a national debate has been ignored by Alcoa and all other parties involved.

The Master Plan in a Nutshell: Two Aluminum Smelters within 10 miles each other, one within 3 miles of a major town (Pt. Fortin) the other within 6 miles of that same town. About 25,000 people live within a ten mile radius of these smelters. All this on a 1864 sq. mile Caribbean Island with one of the highest population densities on the planet of 550 people per square mile. (lush with rainforests and spectacular bird watching according to Trinidad's tourist brochures)

CALL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL PROTEST GATHERING IN ICELAND 21 JULY 2006

The Icelandic highlands are the last great expanse of true wilderness left in Western Europe. Now the country's hydroelectric potential has been targeted by multinational corporations, who intend to establish large-scale heavy industry in these hitherto pristine hinterlands. These multinational vandals - willingly helped by the Icelandic government - are about to produce an environmental catastrophe of unprecedented proportions.

A series of gigantic dams is already under construction at Kárahnjúkar in the eastern highlands of Iceland. These dams are designated solely to generate energy for one massive ALCOA aluminium smelter to be built by war-profiteers Bechtel in the beautiful fjord of Reydarfjördur, and due to be operational in 2007. The national grid will not derive a single kilowatt from it for domestic use. The natural habitat of many rare and endangered plants and animals will be submerged, lost, destroyed.

Other aluminium corporations are greedily lining up for the cheap energy supply promised by future hydro-electric dam projects planned all over the Icelandic highlands.

In the Valle de San Felix, the purest water in Chile
runs from 2 rivers, fed
by 2 glaciers.

Indigenous farmers use the water, there is no
unemployment, and they provide
the second largest source of income for the area.

Under the glaciers has been found a huge deposit of gold, silver and other minerals. To get at these, it would be necessary to break, to destroy the glaciers - something never conceived of in the history of the world - and to make 2 huge holes, each as big as a whole mountain, one for extraction and one for the mine's rubbish tip.

The project is called PASCUA LAMA. The company is
called Barrick Gold. The operation is planned by a multi-national company,
one of whose members is George Bush Senior. The Chilean Government has approved the project to start this year, 2006. The only reason it hasn't started yet is because the farmers have got a
temporary stay of execution.

If they destroy the glaciers, they will not just destroy the source of specially pure water, but they will permanently contaminate the 2 rivers so they will never again be fit for human or animal consumption because of the use of cyanide and sulphuric acid in the extraction
process.

Every last gramme of gold will go abroad to the multinational company and not one will be left with the people whose land it is. They will only be left with the poisoned water and the resulting illnesses.

The farmers have been fighting a long time for their land, but have been forbidden to make a TV appeal by a ban from the Ministry of the Interior.

Their only hope now of putting brakes on this project is to get help from international justice.
